Ok, so when Brett met me I had never really been camping before.  I know, even I am kind of shocked by this revelation.  I was never a girl scout and our family vacations were road trips from one bed and breakfast to the next.  Honestly Brett was pretty floored that I was a camping virgin.  It was quite the contrast from his boyscout summers spent backpacking for days, sleeping under the stars and foraging.  Oh wait your not supposed to forage… oops.

He eased me into the campers lifestyle.  On our first trip we car camped and slept on an air mattress in the bed of the truck.  During our second camping trip he had me set up the tent.  I think he spent a lot of time laughing while I tried to figure out where all the polls went and got tangled up in the rain fly.  There was definitely some pouty lip and foot stomping the first couple times I set up the tent, it is so much easier to just blow up an the air mattress in the back of the truck and be done with it.

Brett is our master cooker because my camp cooking skills consist of roasting marshmallows and boiling water.  He is also the official fire starter and he usually has to pick out where the tent is going to go.  The few times he left if up to me we ended up on a hill or somewhere quite lumpy.

Well a year ago today we took our camping skills to the next level and hiked into Havasupai Falls in the Grand Canyon.  To get down to the waterfalls and camp sites it’s a 13 mile, 3000 vertical foot hike down switchbacks, over rocky terrain and through the canyons. Due to the extreme Arizona heat our little group opted to make this hike in at night, beginning our descent at 2:30am.

Brett and I managed to bring all the wrong gear.  Our camp stove was to big, our tent was heavy and leaked when we got a fluke rain storm, and our campers pot set got stuck inside of each other making it impossible to cook.  But we had the time of our lives!  The air was hot on our skin and the water chillingly perfect.  We visited all of the waterfalls and wished we had more time to visit them all again.

When we decided to go with our friends to Havasupai we knew it would be the trip of a lifetime and we probably wouldn’t return.  But I think back on our trip often and I’ll admit that I’m starting to get the itch to go back.

We wanted to post this to share what an amazing time we had.

It would be an understatement to say that we were all tired.havasupai reservation dogsMore cute resi dogshavasupai reservation dog

This was some practice time on our scooters before taking the licence test.  We got really good at making circles around planters, using our cute orange blinkers and weaving in and out of cones.

I’m thinking of naming my scooter Eloise and we are still trying to come up with a manly name for Brett’s scooter.

We were inspired a few months ago to plant some little artichoke plants.  They have grown far larger and faster than we ever anticipated.  Still high on the success from our artichokes we attacked a larger section of abandoned flower bed in our yard.  For fun we decided not to go with the traditional garden boxes but just plant everything together.  This way our vegetables can grow up looking at pretty flowers.  For this season we acquired a variety of tomato plants including my favorite Early Girls.  Brett is pretty excited about our strawberry plants and  made it his personal mission to plant them all, making little mounds for each one.  Now we just have to devise a plan to keep the dogs from snacking on our strawberries before we get the chance to harvest them.  Our pack of little dogs can be such sneaky  little thieves.  Last year we had to fence in our tomato plants because Kita kept eating all the ripe tomatoes off the vines.  At least she was the only one getting caught with tomato all over her face.

Our next gardening mission should we choose to accept it will be growing cucumbers from seed.  Let the green thumb challenge begin!

I can’t wait for our Early Girl tomato  plants to grow up.  We plated some last year and were rewarded with delicious tomatoes for months.

The dogs tried their best to help us in the only way they seem to know how by laying in our way, walking through the newly tilled dirt, and sniffing all the flowers.

So I thought theses fuzzy white little plants were going to grow into low lying shrubbery, but after planting this one I was informed by experienced gardeners that they turn into rather large bushes.  I may have to rethink where I planted theses little guys  so they don’t overtake the strawberries or even the stone lions.

Maggie kept sleeping in strange places.

Grow little flowers grow!

So secretly who doesn’t like playing tourist?  We never seem to get the chance to truly enjoy the sights, history and events that our city offers us because we are busy photographing peoples lives, playing with our dogs, and running our business.  This lack of sight seeing is not a reflection upon San Diego, Brett and I haven’t taken advantage of any city we have lived in.

So I can’t begin to tell you how happy I get when friends come into town to stay with us.  It’s the perfect excuse for us to go rent those silly little yellow GoCars, or tour the Maritime Museum, take the Old Town Trolly tour, or maybe kayak out from La Jolla Shores.  When a couple of our favorite friends,  Anthony and Cassie  rolled into town with 2 beach cruisers hanging out of their truck bed I got giddy with excitement.  Our poor bikes sit in back yard most of the time waiting someone to come along and give us an excuse to take them out.  (I promise we would ride them more if we didn’t on a series of seriously steep hills).  Bird Rock Coffee Roasters was our first stop on the bikes and once we were properly loaded up with caffeine we headed down to Mission Bay to start our adventurous weekend.  We navigated the alleyways of Pacific Beach until we reached the peacefulness of the bay.  Somewhere along the way to took a wrong turn and attempted riding our bikes through the sand.  Some of us were more successful at this than others.

Day 2 of Anthony and Cassie’s stay brought us to the Point Loma lighthouse.  I hate to admit that I was so young the last time I visited the lighthouse that I don’t actually remember it, at all.   Yeah I’m starting to think Brett and I need to play tourist more often.  The tide pools around the lighthouse are beautiful and the cliffside landscape reminds me of spots along the Oregon Coast.  We took a self guided tour of the lighthouse (all of 5 minutes) somehow I always seem to forget how small old lighthouses can be.  The look so much bigger from the outside.

Yep  Brett and I love adventuring in our town!

My kick stand was the least effective of our 4 bikes, but it didn’t stop me from repeatedly trying to get it to stand up in the sand. I would get it balanced, walk away and turn around as it would topple over.  Below we documented all my attempts.
